Founder & Host

Mina Yildiz

Personal Statement:

The larger social constructs within the United States enable inequities many Americans face daily. These inequities have been revealed to me as I grew up in a society that has historically and continually oppressed my identities as a woman, an immigrant, and as a person navigating life with three chronic health conditions. These inequities have continued to be revealed to me as I interact and listen to the stories of others with identities different than my own. The myriad of lives I have lived, and the experiences I have undergone have shaped my passions, my values, and how I choose to live each day. That is why I founded this project, not to just bring attention to present-day oppression but to also uplift the positives of what people in the community are working towards and for us to rejoice in hope, as it is in our power, as a collective, to change this world. I approach this project out of passion, devotion, and hope for the future.

Background:

Mina is a first-year student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in Asian Languages and Cultures with a certificate in Global Cultures, Languages, and Education. Her interest in languages and cultures first stemmed in her early childhood when she lived with her single mother in Eagle Heights, a campus housing community full of diverse cultures. When Mina learned about different cultures and languages, she felt more connected to her own Turkish heritage. As a result, she began self-studying languages and pursuing ways to expand her cultural horizons. Growing her passion influenced her personal, academic, and career goals and promoted a focus on critical languages and cultures. That focus led her to choose Asian Languages and Cultures: East Asian Studies as her major at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she continues to pursue cultural opportunities both at university and beyond and hopes to be fluent in multiple critical languages that will assist her goal of being in an international public affairs career.

Regarding her passion for public service and policy, Mina had built experience through student government as a dually-enrolled student at Madison College, where she was the Vice President of Team Development, a part of the Executive Council, an Academic Council representative, and co-chair of the Racial Equity Committee. When Mina started college at UW-Madison, she joined their student government through the Associated Students of Madison (ASM) Internship Program, where she learned about community organizing, collaborated with the UW-Madison community, and received guidance and support in cultivating a grassroots initiative. Other experiences include her time as an intern at the City Attorney's Office, where she reviewed zoning ordinances to create a legal camping ground for people without homes and updated the City Code of Ordinances to gender pronoun references while learning about the legislative process and inner workings of a municipality. After that, she started interning at a nonprofit called Common Wealth Development, where she helped other youths reach their highest potential by delivering employment, financial education, job placement, and mentoring to those facing barriers. Mina hopes to represent the historically underrepresented and develop policies that can lead to substantial change. Public policy work embodies her values and passions as it can help her create action pathways to strengthen communities and create a more equitable tomorrow.

Quinn Henneger

Personal Statement:

One of my main values in life is to expand my perspective in any way possible. To constantly be learning about different parts of the world and experiencing new things, even if it makes me uncomfortable. I am pursuing political science and international studies since I am deeply interested in how life is like in other countries, and passionate about learning how government can be a platform for creating change in one’s community. I joined the Collective Impact Podcast to apply these similar ideologies of exposing myself and learning about new cultures and perspectives through working with influential members of the Madison community who are involved with social justice. These impactful and necessary stories need to be heard by as many people as possible, so I’m incredibly proud to be working on the public relations aspect of the podcast with Mina. I can’t wait to see how these stories will inspire others to create change in the Madison community that will have ripple effects outside of Madison, all going along with the idea of a collective impact.

Background:

Quinn is a first-year student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in Political Science and International Studies with a certificate in Public Policy who is driven by many topics within social justice, humanitarianism, demilitarization, abolition, and grass-roots organizing, all of which contribute to Quinn's deep desire to create a world that not only accepts change and the uncertainty that follows it, but to nurture curiosity, and foster a collective eagerness in the unknown. This eagerness to never stop asking questions, to be open to new ideas and perspectives, can take many shapes, ranging from topics such as researching astrophysics, learning a new language, or even exploring one's own gender identity. This extensive range in topics to feed into their curiosity is part of the reason why Quinn is so fascinated by several different facets of life and pursues life-long learning.

Quinn applies these ideologies through many facets at UW such as being intern for the Associated Students of Madison (UW Student Government) and a Badger Volunteer at LGBTQ Books to Prisoners. When Quinn is at home in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, they spend their time helping organize Peace In The Park, a non-profit organization that they co-founded that hosts several community events including an annual music festival, film night, and panel discussion that all revolve around advocating for and being a space to hold meaningful discussions around diversity, equity, and inclusion in their community.
